Weekly Wrap Up: Homeschool Edition

This week we finished up week 4 of homeschooling. Things seem to be trucking along pretty good. There are some things we found out this week that are just not working for us, and then there are others that we abosolutely loved.

The week started off with deciding that we DO NOT like Spelling Power. It is too much of a rigorous program for both of my children. We decided that my son is ready for some vocabulary, while my daughter still could use some spelling help. If you have any suggestions on either of these, I would love to hear about it.

Kayla got to do her very first girly makeover this week which was the highlight of her week. She crossed over from little girl to my tween and has decided that she likes the froo froo hair--but not the makeup.

We finished our week early on Thursday so that we could have a 4 day weekend. I gave the kids the whole time off from their chores, which they were apprecitve of.

Next week, we are going to begin home-ec lessons. I think that it is so important for kids to know how to cook and clean so that when they get older, they are not like I was and didn't even know how to wash a load of clothes!

That's it for our weekly wrap up. If you would like to join in, come visit Kris over at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

I agree, kids need to be ready to care for themselves and their home when they are out on their own. As for spelling, we're enjoying SpellQuizzer, if your child likes going at their own pace and self quizzing they might enjoy it too. Kris has a review of it on her blog. Spelling Power didn't work for us either.

I am wondering about spelling power also. I picked it up cheap at a used curriculum sale and still haven't started anything with it. I guess I am balking at the stringent schedule as well! Thanks for sharing your day.

Thanks for joining the Wrap-Up this week, Jennifer. I agree with Cheryl about SpellQuizzer. My kids enjoy it. You might look at Apples: Daily Drills for Spelling, too.

I totally agree about kids needing to know how to do things. I told my dh, this summer, that with our kids being 7 (8 next Monday), 9, and 14, there's no reason why I should have to do all the laundry, vacuuming, loading/unloading the dishwasher, cleaning the bathrooms and so on. So, we've been working at handing all that off to them. So far, they've done really well.

We're going to start cooking lessons next. The oldest two can make some basic stuff, but I want to go for full meals -- at least for my oldest right now.
