The Nina and the Pinta~A Must See Field Trip

The ships were huge!

The information learned was invaluable! Did you know that back in Columbus' time, that the average age of a ship mate was 14-19 years old?
Kayla was really intrigued by this contraption. I am still not sure what it is. We are going to look it up and find out what it is.

There were many plaques on the ship with notes about what each item was. I took as many pictures as I could of them so that the kids and I can test our knowledge later this week.

All in all, we had a wonderful time. I was able to snap a few photos of the kids as they enjoyed listening to the guide on the ship,
and I was able to get them to stand still for a few seconds so I could snap a new photo of their lovely little(not) bodies!

And to top it off, we were able to get a family group photo (rare--because I am always the one behind the camera)!
(uh--yeah, that's me--the one in the pink. I'm the SHORT one)

This was a great field trip. Check to see if they are coming to your area--www.thenina.com

We had "tall ships" come through our harbor in August - wonder if these are the same ones? We didn't go, but probably will if/when they come again in a couple of years (when my girls are older). BTW, I totally agree with you about the family pic dilemma! People always say, "Why aren't you in more pictures with your family?" But SOMEONE has to take them! :^)

We will be taking the same field trip when the ships make it to Alabama later in the month. We can't wait! We saw a replica of the Santa Maria in Ohio a few years ago (not a sailing ship though) when we studied Explorers and it was great. My kids will never forget the "toilet paper" the guide showed them which was really just the end of a rope that floated along in the water when not in use. Of course some sailors preferred to have their own individual wiper that they carried in their pocket- can you say EWWWW??? Anyway, very memorable and we can't wait to see the Nina and Pinta! BTW- how much did this cost? I can't find prices on the website. Did you visit as part of a homeschool group or on your own? Loved your pictures! :)

VERY nice! I saw these (from the dock only) when they were in Pittsburgh earlier this year. Have you read "Carry on Mr. Bowditch" it's all about early sailing/navigation stuff.
You're a GREAT mom and wonderful homeschooler!
